Vagabond: A Memoir by Tim Curry: REVIEW

Synopsis

Actor Tim Curry looks back on his life and career, from his breakout role in The Rocky Horror Picture Show to his debilitating stroke in 2012.

My Review

This is such a fun memoir. I grew up watching movies like Annie, The Three Musketeers, Home Alone 2, Clue, and Oscar (yes, Oscar!! I love Dr Poole too, Mr Curry!) incessantly, so I’ve always considered myself a Tim Curry fan. He’s one of the greatest character actors of all time, period. I’m so glad he decided to write this memoir.

He’s very careful to let us know in advance that this is not a salacious tell-all, a list of his romantic relationships, or a moving story of triumph over adversity, which are the categories that a lot of celebrity memoirs fall into. Even though he does on occasion offer his opinion of celebrities he’s worked with, this memoir is mainly an account of his most memorable working experiences, with enough context from his childhood and general life to help us understand his perspective of them. Told with Curry’s dry wit and deep compassion, it really feels like you’re having a cozy chat with him, and it’s absolutely delightful to read. I highly recommend it if you enjoy his acting.

I hope that now he writes a book about his passion for gardening!
